What are veneers?

Veneer treatments have been an option in the world of cosmetic dentistry for around 50 years and are a permanent solution to improve the appearance of your teeth and, in turn, your smile. Veneers are seen as an alternative, less abrasive option to braces, as they can be used to mend any gaps and misalignment within the mouth. While the process may have changed, the sentiment behind the treatment has remained the same.

Dental veneers are thin pieces of material placed on the front of the teeth to alter their appearance. Each one is custom made to the individual to make it as natural-looking as possible. The material used for your veneers will either be made out of a composite or porcelain material. Both materials offer different things. While composite veneers are a popular choice, they are mainly used to cover a small part of the tooth and can be used to manipulate the shape of the tooth to get your desired result. They are made from a composite resin material and are quicker to make than porcelain veneers.

Direct composite veneers are often used in composite bonding treatments. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are made out of a stronger material and, as a result, they last a little bit longer and do not stain as easily as composite veneers. This material is bonded onto the tooth to achieve the result required to create the desired smile. Porcelain veneers generally last for up to 15 years, provided they are cared for correctly, while composite veneers last for seven years and will need to be replaced over time.  Because of the durability and toughness of the porcelain veneers, they do cost a bit more than composite veneers.

At Dental Excellence, our price for porcelain veneers is £800 per tooth and a composite veneer is £345 per tooth. Both porcelain and composite veneers require the recontouring of the teeth before being fitted. You can find out more about the different types of veneers we use below. Unsure which type of veneer to go for? Our team will talk you through the pros and cons of both options and determine the best route for you to go down depending on the smile you are hoping to achieve.

Do I need veneers?

There is a range of issues that can lead to someone wanting to get veneers. While there are definitely cosmetic benefits to the procedure, there are also dental health issues that can contribute to that decision. If any of the below is an issue for you, getting a veneer treatment may be an option to explore.

  • Improve your smile: A smile is a big part of someone’s identity. Unfortunately, people can become self-conscious about their smiles, affecting their confidence, self-esteem, and how they present themselves to the world. This can be for a multitude of reasons, including discolouration and misalignment. In this case, veneers are a great long-term solution as they are able to create a natural smile whilst hiding a range of issues without having to undergo an extensive treatment plan. Together, we can create the smile you want so you can be the best version of yourself and allow your confidence to shine through.
  • Fixing the shape: People also undergo veneer treatment to alter the shape of their teeth. For example, individuals may suffer from crooked teeth and, as a result, suffer from self-esteem and confidence issues. This also goes for different shaped and sized teeth where some are pointier or smaller than others. If you do have crooked teeth, veneers can prove to be a good alternative to braces.
  • Closing the gap: Veneers are also a viable option for people who have gaps in their teeth. The veneer should be able to close this gap. This doesn’t just improve the appearance of your smile or teeth in general but the overall health of the tooth. This is because gaps in the mouth can lead to dental issues, such as tooth decay and plaque build-up, which, if not dealt with, can lead to gum disease.
  • Enamel erosion: With the food and drink we consume on a daily basis, there is a chance for the enamel to be worn down. This happens naturally as a result of time and is escalated by habits like drinking caffeinated drinks, such as tea and coffee, or smoking. When this happens, veneers are often recommended as a way to correct the damage. Getting veneers as a treatment can also help with teeth sensitivity, which worn-down enamel can be a cause of.
  • The everyday grind: The general use of teeth over time can cause them to become chipped or cracked. In some cases, due to grinding and gnawing, your teeth can become uneven, which will impact how you bite. In this case, veneers can be used to make biting and eating food more enjoyable while also making the tooth appear to be naturally healthy, improving the quality of your smile.
  • Fix white spots and streaks: White spots can be caused by excessive fluoride use, tartar build up, poor oral hygiene, dehydration, and marks caused by your braces. In some cases, it can also be the cause of enamel hypoplasia - this is when the enamel is thinner than it should be and in most cases is a result of other health issues.
  • Cover-up fillings: Veneers are also used to cover up large resin fillings that have become discoloured over time.

In your initial conversation with our experts, they will be able to discuss your dental issues with you and confirm if veneer treatment is the way to go to get the results that you need. Book your consultation with us today.

What are the advantages of veneers?

The procedure of getting veneers is minimally invasive and is relatively pain-free. It is a good option if you would like a cosmetic dental treatment without needless pain. As the veneers are placed on the visible parts of the teeth, the most invasive aspects of the procedure will be during the prepping stage, as, in most cases, a thin layer of the enamel will need to be removed. The after-effect of the procedure is a big advantage.

Veneers are designed to give a natural appearance to the teeth and mouth. Therefore, following the procedure, your teeth will have a healthy glow that we hope will elevate not only your smile but your confidence, too. There is very little additional maintenance required when it comes to looking after your veneers. You simply make sure you brush your teeth twice a day and keep up with your oral hygiene to get the most out of the procedure.

A big advantage of using porcelain veneers is how hard they are in comparison to your regular teeth. This means when the veneers sit on top of the tooth it is also protecting the underlying tooth it is covering.

Will you need to shave my teeth?

In most cases - yes, your teeth (the enamel to be precise) may need to be shaved down; however, the way in which it is done is very much dependent on your specific needs, which is why our dental experts will present you with a bespoke treatment plan outlining every step of the procedure. The amount that is shaved varies too and is something you can ask your dentist during your initial consultation.

What is the difference between veneers and implants?

Both veneers and implants are treatments that improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. The main difference lies in the areas of the tooth each of them covers.

Both composite and porcelain veneers are designed to cover the front of your teeth, whereas implants are fixed to your jawbone in order to replace a missing tooth. The treatment times for both vary too, as veneers are often placed within two appointments, which can be made fairly close together. The process for implants can take up to six months.

If you are unsure about which path to go down, our team will be on hand to discuss both options with you and advise you on the best route to take depending on your dental issues and the desired results you are hoping to achieve.

Our Veneers Treatments in Liverpool

At Dental Excellence, we provide both composite and porcelain veneers. The treatment takes place at our Liverpool facility and is carried out by a qualified experienced member of our team. The facility is created to emulate a spa to keep you feeling calm and relaxed on the day of your appointment. From the first point of contact, we will talk to you about your needs, discussing the correct treatment for you to gain your desired results. We go into detail about each of the potential procedures, what they involve, and what results they will have.

Once we are happy that you have fully understood what the procedure entails and we have answered any questions you have, the next step is for you to meet your dedicated dental specialist who will be with you throughout your treatment process. At this stage, you will be able to confirm which treatment plan you want to go with and your preferred payment method. Each treatment plan is bespoke and custom-designed to ensure we achieve your desired results.

As part of the process, you will have a chance to test drive a temporary smile so you can see what your smile will look like before you undergo the treatment. The aim of the treatment is for the veneer to emulate your natural teeth as much as possible. In some cases, treatment on your natural teeth will need to be carried out in order to achieve the best result. If this is the case, this treatment will be carried out ahead of your appointment. If you are happy to go ahead, a second appointment will be made to confirm measurements and fittings of your teeth ahead of your final appointment, which will be the fitting.

The overall duration of your time with us will depend on the treatment recommended ahead of the veneer implantation and the type of veneers you have fitted in. Composite veneers require little lead time and can often be done in one swift appointment; on the other hand, porcelain veneers take a bit longer to be moulded to suit your measurements and, as a result, may require an extra visit. Following the treatment, we provide aftercare should it be required. To start your journey and transform your smile, call our team today on 0151 729 0000.

How do I look after my teeth following the treatment?

While the aftercare of getting veneers is not extensive and you should be able to go back to regular use of your mouth fairly quickly, there are certain precautions you can take to ensure your veneers stay pristine.

  • Moderate your drinking: Try to stay away from caffeinated drinks, such as tea and coffee, and alcoholic drinks, such as red wine, within the first few days of the treatment as it will help prevent the veneers from getting stained.
  • Quit smoking: Quitting entirely is, of course, recommended, but if not possible just yet, reducing your cigarette intake on your journey to quitting can also do good. As with caffeinated drinks and red wine, cigarettes stain your teeth so staying away from them will help keep the veneers looking fresh.
  • Book an oral hygiene appointment: Your hygienist will be able to give you advice and do follow-up checks to ensure your mouth is kept as clean as possible.
  • Use a retainer: If you are someone who grinds their teeth or clenches their teeth, using a retainer while you sleep will prevent the veneer from becoming ruined.
  • Be careful what you chew: Once you have had your treatment, you will be able to chew food regularly without any issues; however, please be aware that veneers are not immune to damage so avoid chewing things like ice, for example, to prevent them from chipping. If you chip your veneer following the treatment, don’t worry, it can be repaired. If you opt to use a composite veneer, the chipped area will be repaired; when you chip a porcelain veneer, however, the entire veneer will need to be replaced.
  • Protect yourself when doing sports: Using a mouthguard while carrying out sporting activities is a must. A mouthguard gives your mouth area another layer of support, protecting you in the event of a collision or facial impact.

Being mindful of the above and taking these steps will increase the longevity of your veneers and allow you to enjoy your new smile. If you have any questions about aftercare or find you need additional support following your treatment, our experts offer follow-up appointments and will alleviate any concerns you may have.
