Unlike traditional metal braces, Six Month Smile fixed braces focus on improving the alignment of the most visible teeth. This ensures minimal impact on your appearance while still giving you the straight, beautiful smile you've always wanted.

Braces explained

at Dental Excellence

Everything you need to know about fixed braces - how they work, what to expect and why patients across Liverpool, Chelsea and beyond trust us with their smile.

A woman with braces smiling at the camera.

Six Month Smile fixed braces use small, tooth-coloured brackets and wires to guide your teeth into the correct position. The brackets are attached to your teeth and remain in place for the duration of your treatment, gradually moving your smile into perfect alignment. At Dental Excellence, we use discreet, tooth-coloured materials for a more subtle experience. Six Month Smile braces are designed for cosmetic alignment, typically focusing on the visible teeth, and treatment is completed in approximately six months.

Your dentist adjusts the thin archwire at regular intervals to control the movement of each tooth. This steady pressure gently and effectively aligns your smile over time. Since Six Month Smile braces remain in place 24/7, progress is consistent and predictable. These braces are ideal for addressing cosmetic concerns related to visible teeth and provide a fast, effective solution with a clear timeline of around six months.

Six Month Smile fixed braces are perfect for individuals with cosmetic concerns such as rotated teeth, gaps, or mild overcrowding, particularly in the visible teeth area. They are suitable for both adults and teens and are often recommended when clear aligners or traditional braces aren't the best fit. If you’re looking for a quick, discreet treatment that delivers visible results in about six months, Six Month Smile braces might be the ideal solution.

Braces, Composite bonding

six month smile with a clear brace

I went to dental excellence and had The six month smile with a clear brace and composite edging. Ansar has always carried out my treatment to a very high standard and been patient even when I had some breakages. Peter and Rhea have been so nice and professional and put me at ease. The advice from start to finish during my treatment was always professional. All the staff are so friendly and they have made the whole experience good for me.I am so happy with my overall smile!

Braces, Composite bonding

thank you so much

I’ve followed Dental Excellence on Instagram for years and always admired their work. After being passed from pillar to post with other dentists saying I needed braces to fix my uneven front teeth, I went to Dr Harrison Child who talked me through all my options and advised that composite bonding was actually best for me. He was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel really informed and at ease through the entire process as I was a bit nervous. He discussed what was going to happen at each appointment and I was extremely comfortable and felt in very safe hands. I’m absolutely made up with the results and finally don’t feel self conscious about my 'buck teeth' after years. I’d recommend him and Dental Excellence to anyone wanting to take that step to improve their smile. Thank you so much!

FAQs

Your Six Month Smile braces questions

answered by Dental Excellence

What causes crooked teeth?

Crooked teeth are quite common, but the severity varies. For some, it is hereditary, and once their baby teeth have fallen out, the crookedness of the adult teeth remains. For others, bad habits in childhood, such as thumb sucking, can cause the teeth to become crooked over time. Children’s teeth are highly susceptible to outside influence, which is why it is important not to let youngsters use a dummy or suck their thumb for too long, as this can cause malocclusion. These issues then need to be corrected later in life - or ideally as early as possible - to prevent other dental problems from developing.

If crooked teeth are treated when young, the results are often better and can be achieved much quicker. Once fixed braces have been removed, the retainer will only need to be worn for a set amount of time, as the teeth will become used to their new position and will not attempt to move back. With adults, however, once their braces have been removed, they must wear a retainer regularly, as their teeth will try to move back to the position they have been in for many years. This is why it is important to act as soon as possible and benefit from receiving treatment while still young.

Fortunately, thanks to modern advancements in dental technology, fixing crooked teeth is easier than ever and there are more options for patients to choose from. At Dental Excellence, we offer a range of treatments, from Same Day Smile makeovers to Invisalign, which can correct crooked teeth. During our Same Day Smile treatment, we use composite materials to fill gaps between your teeth and make them appear straighter.

What causes overcrowded teeth?

Overcrowded teeth are commonly the result of hereditary factors and can cause teeth to grow unnaturally, sometimes leading to more serious oral health issues later in life. Problems with the jawbone can also cause overcrowding. For example, if the jawbones are too close together, the teeth may grow in different directions to compensate for the lack of space. This can result in overbites and misalignments between the top and bottom rows of teeth.

In some cases, teeth can grow unnaturally even if the jawbone is in the correct position. This is often due to the timing of when they penetrate the gums. If some teeth grow more quickly while others are slower to emerge, the teeth that break through first can occupy the space intended for the others. This can cause the remaining teeth to grow crooked as a result of overcrowding. Although it can be difficult to prevent overcrowding from a young age, there are treatments we offer that can help you achieve a more even smile.

At Dental Excellence, we use our expertise and state-of-the-art facilities - equipped with advanced technology - to provide life-changing treatments that enhance your appearance and boost your confidence. Fixed braces are one option to correct overcrowded teeth, but there are other, more discreet options available. This includes Invisalign, a system that uses a clear retainer to gradually reshape your teeth, reduce overcrowding and align your smile.

How do I clean fixed braces?

Fixed braces can be tricky to clean as they occupy a large portion of the mouth, particularly in the areas you would normally brush with a toothbrush. It can be done, but cleaning must be more thorough to reach those hard-to-access areas and prevent lasting damage. It is also important to remove any food that gets caught between the brackets and wires, as these areas can easily trap food particles.

Brushing your braces just as you would your teeth is essential, but you need to be more thorough with your toothbrush. Brushing carefully around each bracket and getting the bristles between the wires is crucial. Using a special rubber flossing device, similar to a toothpick, will also help you get between the gaps in your braces. Do not neglect your gums either - brushing these is just as important. Using your toothbrush in circular motions around the brackets and then moving down to the gums is a good way to ensure you are still brushing correctly.

It is extremely important to brush your braces and teeth regularly, as plaque can build up easily. With a larger surface area, bacteria have more opportunity to collect on your teeth. The braces can also act as a barrier, keeping bacteria in contact with the tooth’s surface for longer before it is removed. This can result in lasting damage once the braces are taken off.

What are the alternatives to fixed braces?

Fixed braces are the most common form of braces, as they are offered by orthodontists and sometimes provided free of charge. For young people who need correction, braces may be available free of charge, but for others this may not be the case. Some adults have gone through most of their lives with dental issues that were never corrected and may not want fixed braces at this stage. The options can seem limited, especially if you have healthy teeth and do not want veneer treatments. Luckily, we have several alternatives available at Dental Excellence.

Invisalign is a popular alternative to fixed braces. This treatment uses transparent trays that can be worn without being noticed by others. They can also be removed whenever you wish, allowing you to eat and drink normally. This is in clear contrast to fixed braces, which cannot be removed and may cover your smile for up to three years in the most extensive cases. The discreet appearance and high effectiveness of Invisalign has made it the most popular alternative to fixed braces.

There are also other options that are an excellent choice if your teeth are damaged or discoloured as well as misaligned. Opting for composite bonding allows us to repair the shape of your teeth and whiten them using composite materials. This can be done as a separate procedure from veneers if you do not want to cover the entire tooth. If you would prefer a veneer treatment to make your teeth appear whiter and healthier, we also offer both composite veneers and porcelain veneers.

Can I get fixed braces if I’m an adult?

There is no age limit on fixed braces, as the process is the same regardless of the patient’s age. The only difference is the effectiveness of the treatment, as braces generally take longer to work the older you are. Another factor to consider is the impact fixed braces can have on your appearance. Many adults who need dental correction prefer not to have their smile covered by braces and would avoid them if possible. We understand this, which is why we offer alternatives to fixed braces that can achieve the same impressive results.

For adults, incorporating the additional check-ups, discomfort and maintenance that come with fixed braces can be challenging. With alternatives such as Invisalign, or other treatments we offer, you could achieve long-lasting results without the added hassle. If you are unsure which option would be best for you, you can book a consultation with us and we will talk you through how each treatment can benefit you. Our personal approach means we will be with you every step of the way to answer any questions you may have about the treatment.

Can crooked teeth harm my health if it's not treated?

Crooked teeth can cause a range of difficulties, whether through a direct impact on your ability to eat or by affecting your confidence and self-esteem. They can also have a knock-on effect, leading to further issues such as excessive tooth wear, grinding (which can cause headaches), and gum disease as a result of not being able to brush effectively. These problems only worsen the longer they are left untreated. By fixing crooked teeth, you will not only enjoy a better smile but also be able to care for your oral hygiene far more effectively.

Being able to floss and brush between your teeth to reach all surfaces is key to keeping them healthy in the long term. If you do not care for your teeth properly, it can lead to decay, cavities, discolouration and even tooth loss. Visiting your dentist regularly to check that you are brushing correctly and reaching hidden areas is especially important if you have crooked or overcrowded teeth.

If you are looking to treat crooked teeth, we can provide the solution in the form of our Invisalign treatment, which is designed to align your teeth while remaining as discreet as possible when worn.

Are crooked teeth and overcrowded teeth serious issues?

Having extra teeth in your mouth that cause overcrowding or crookedness does not necessarily mean it is a serious issue. However, this depends on each case. Some people may have minimal crookedness that does not affect the way they eat, brush or close their mouth, while others may find all of these things affected. At a young age, this may not seem like a problem, but as larger adult teeth begin to come through they can place excessive pressure on the surrounding teeth. This pressure can cause pain unless the teeth are given more space to grow, and may even lead to misalignment as they are forced to grow unnaturally.

The need for straight teeth goes beyond looks and aesthetics, as it also impacts overall oral health. Minor tooth gaps, misshapen teeth and stained teeth can all contribute to poor oral health and, unless corrected, may lead to more serious issues in the future. The seriousness of these issues depends on how severe the problems become.

For example, if you have difficulty reaching certain teeth due to crookedness, bacteria that are not removed will grow and begin to cause decay. This decay can then develop into a large cavity and spread to the gum. At this point, gum disease can develop quickly and worsen if not treated. Severe gum disease also increases the risk of other serious health issues, such as diabetes, as it makes controlling blood sugar levels more difficult.

At Dental Excellence, we understand the importance of good oral health and always aim to provide both effective treatment and practical guidance to help you maintain it. The treatments we offer to correct crooked teeth can help you avoid serious long-term health issues.

Are fixed braces very visible?

No - we use discreet, tooth-coloured brackets that blend with your natural teeth, making them much less noticeable than traditional metal braces.
